Send an email now to world leaders and the
President of Madagascar to take immediate action to fulfill their human rights
obligations to protect the Malagasy people from the deep-rooted injustices
being driven by the climate crisis globally.
Madagascar
is one of the most climate-vulnerable countries in the world. The southern
region of the country, locally known as Le Grand Sud (the Deep South), is
experiencing its worst drought in history. More than a million people are on
the brink of famine and thousands more already facing catastrophic famine-like
conditions. The drought has had a disastrous impact on the region, malnutrition
is increasing, and access to water, sanitation, and hygiene are becoming more
precarious.
The
situation in southern Madagascar is a reminder that climate change is already
causing great suffering, including death, and an illustration of the
deep-rooted injustices being driven by the climate crisis globally. Malagasy
people have been denied the enjoyment of their most basic human rights,
including the right to life, right to health, right to adequate food, and
rights to water and sanitation.
With
climate change projected to worsen the severity and occurrence of droughts in
southern Madagascar, it is urgent for the international community to respond to
the current emergency.
Join
Malagasy people in calling on world leaders, particularly those of countries
most responsible for the climate crisis, and the government of Madagascar to
take immediate action to fulfill their human rights obligations to protect the
people of Madagascar from the disastrous effects of drought and climate change.
