According
to a readout of their meeting on Tuesday, Rwandan President Paul Kagame and
British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak are anticipating the first flights under
Britain's proposal to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda, which are scheduled to
depart in the spring.
Sunak
wishes to send the thousands of asylum seekers who come to Britain each year on
small boats to Rwanda, but legal issues have kept anyone from being transported
there thus far.
Following
a meeting between Sunak and Kagame in London, Sunak's office said: "Both
leaders looked forward to flights departing to Rwanda in the spring."
Before
any flight can depart, Britain's government needs to pass new legislation which
Sunak hopes will pave the way for the government to send asylum seekers who
arrive in Britain without permission to the east African country.
Legislation
that seeks to block further court challenges to the plan will next be debated
in parliament on April 15.
Prior
to the anticipated national election in the latter part of this year, Sunak has
previously stated that he anticipates the first flights to depart in the spring.
