Ethiopia’s Abiy Ahmed sacks Taye Dendea as state minister of Peace

Taye Dendea

In a letter dated December 11, 2023, Ethiopia's Prime Minister Abiy Ahmed fired Taye Dendea, state minister of peace, with immediate effect.

The letter, which was published on Taye Dendea's verified Facebook page, does not provide an explanation for the decision but does congratulate the now-former state minister for his contributions throughout his tenure, which began on October 8, 2021.

This is against the backdrop of Taye Dendea's extraordinary recent television appearances and social media posts in which he harshly criticized the administration led by PM Abiy.

In a Facebook post dated December 6, 2023, and an interview that followed with the BBC's Afaan Oromoo program, Taye held the government accountable for the breakdown of peace negotiations between the Oromo Liberation Army (OLA) and the Ethiopian government in Dar es Salaam.

On Sunday, Dec. 10, 2023, Taye made another criticism of the administration on Facebook for thwarting a protest march that was scheduled to take place in the capital and resulting in the apprehension of over ninety-five people.

Taye Dendea called the PM a "barbarian who plays with human blood" in response to the letter announcing his firing.

Taye has been critical of his own government and the ruling party particularly the administration of the Oromia regional state from where he hails and was elected as member of the Caffee (Chefe), regional parliament.
