Thousands
of people have descended on the northern Ethiopian city of Aksum to celebrate a
religious holiday for the first time in three years.
Festivities
had been paused because of the civil war in the Tigray region that ended a year
ago.
The
nation's holiest city for Orthodox Christians is Aksum, which was the scene of
an alleged massacre shortly after the conflict started in November 2020.
It
is purported to be the residence of the Ark of the Covenant, which houses the
10 commandments that God gave Moses.
The
yearly celebration of St. Mary now takes place at Aksum, which is also a
popular pilgrimage site for visitors from across the nation.
