Beyene Petros, a
distinguished academic and longtime politician, passed away at the age of 74.
According to a number
of sources, including social media posts from Mayor Adanech Abiebie and Prime
Minister Abiy Ahmed, Beyene passed away after receiving significant medical
care for an undisclosed disease.
As recently as a week
ago, Beyoncé was active and answering questions from the media.
In addition, he held
the position of Director-General at the Policy Studies Institute (PSI), which
he had headed since the PM had appointed him to it in 2022.
Beyene was a key figure
in the opposition parties' 2005 movement, which almost resulted in elections
and a government change.
From the 1990s till the
present, Beyene had been a prominent role in nonviolent opposition politics as
the head of the Ethiopian Social Democratic Party (ESDP). Additionally, he was
a key figure in nonviolent political movements in southern Ethiopia.
Beyene spent a
considerable amount of time teaching biology at Addis Abeba University prior to
entering the political sphere. He was a postgraduate student at Tulane
University, where he studied tropical medicine and public health.

played a crucial role in promoting a culture of non-violence and constructive
political dialogue in Ethiopia. She personified the spirit of peaceful
