Journalist
Meaza Mohammed was kidnapped this morning from her home in Addis Abeba's Nifas
Silk sub-city, according to her husband, Robel Gebeyehu, who told Addis
Standard, "They weren't wearing uniforms but they showed her their
IDs."
Meaza
is the co-founder of Roha Media, an online media source, and formerly worked at
Abbay Media. Her husband Robel claimed she was on her way to work when the
men who abducted her accosted her. "We have no idea where she's been
taken," he continued. According to her husband, the police did not conduct
a search of her home or offer an explanation for why she was detained.
Journalist
Maeza is one of three media outlets reported to have been arrested this week.
One
of them, activist Eyasped Tesfaye of Ubuntu YouTube, was abducted on Tuesday,
November 7, 2021 by security forces from his parents' home for unknown reasons.
In
the early hours of Friday, December 10, 2021, Tamrat Negera, a former member of
Addis Neger and Mountain Network, the founder and editor-in-chief of the social
media platform, was similarly arrested by police.
According
to a report released by the CPJ a few days ago, Ethiopia ranks second in
sub-Saharan Africa in the number of journalists arrested.
