Ethiopia says more than 50 citizens evacuated from Lebanon

The Ethiopian Foreign Ministry said on Tuesday that 51 Ethiopian citizens have been evacuated from Lebanon in response to the deteriorating regional situation.

The statement stated that a special committee has been formed to expedite the evacuation process, with a focus on women and children, and that additional evacuations are planned.

Furthermore, the Foreign Ministry announced that the consulate is seeking to relocate citizens to safer areas in Lebanon until additional evacuations can be carried out.

According to an International Organization for Migration (IOM) estimate, Ethiopians make up around 20% of Lebanon's over 250,000 foreign domestic migrant workers, who are mostly from Africa and Asia.

Since September 23, Israel has conducted massive airstrikes across Lebanon, targeting what it claims are Hezbollah targets, resulting in over 1,250 deaths, 3,618 injuries, and the displacement of more than 1.2 million people.

This aerial offensive marks a significant escalation in Israel's ongoing cross-border conflict with Hezbollah, which has worsened as a result of Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip, which has claimed nearly 42,000 lives, the majority of them women and children, since the Hamas attack on October 7 of last year.

Despite international fears about the possibility of a regional conflict as a result of Israel's unrelenting attacks on Gaza and Lebanon, Tel Aviv escalated the situation on October 1 by launching a ground invasion in southern Lebanon.
