Sudan's military leader survives drone strikes – army

Sudan's military leader, General Abdel Fattah al-Burhan, has escaped an assassination attempt, according to an army spokeswoman.

Nabil Abdallah accused the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF), against whom the army has fought for control of the country for the past 16 months.

He said that two drones targeted an army graduation ceremony, killing five individuals at a base in Jabait, which is military territory.

The RSF has not responded to the attack, which comes after Gen Burhan's government agreed to provisionally participate in US-mediated peace negotiations next month.

Previous efforts to end the conflict, which has resulted in the world's worst humanitarian disaster, have failed because both parties have refused to keep their promises.

More than 10 million people have fled their homes since the former allies clashed over an internationally supported political plan to transition to civilian administration.

The Jabait army facility is around 100 kilometers (62 miles) from Port Sudan, the military's de facto capital and where Gen Burhan is stationed.

Video video uploaded by those who attended the ceremony on Wednesday morning shows military graduates moving in ceremonial attire before the sound of a strike.

“The only party that is hostile to the Sudanese people and targeting the Sudanese people is the rebel Rapid Support Forces,” Gen Abdallah told the BBC.

He thanked God that Gen Burhan and “all the commanders present are fine” and that there not many major injuries.
