Ethiopia's
finance ministry announced on Sunday that the country has inked a $600 million
deal with AMEA Power of the United Arab Emirates to build a 300 megawatt wind
farm.
In
order to increase electricity coverage—which, according to the World Bank,
stood at 50% of the population in 2020 and left 60 million people off the
grid—the Horn of Africa country is looking to renewable energy.
According
to a statement from the government, the 18,000-acre Aysha wind farm would
employ 2,000 people both during construction and operation.
AMEA
Power, a Dubai-based company, specializes on renewable energy projects in
emerging areas such as the Middle East and Africa.
In
its Tigray and Oromia regions, Ethiopia already has two minor wind power
projects operating. When the Aysha project is finished, it will be the largest
wind power facility in Ethiopia, according to the finance ministry.
