The
United Nations refugee agency made a request for $1 billion on Monday,
estimating that over 1.8 million people will enter five neighboring countries
by year's end as they fled the turmoil in Sudan.
The
estimate is roughly twice as large as what UNHCR predicted in May, not long
after the fighting started.
In
response to conflict between the Sudanese army and the paramilitary Rapid
Support Forces (RSF) in the nation's capital Khartoum and elsewhere, more than
one million people have already fled the country for neighboring states.
