Ethiopia reconnects Tigray's capital power grid after yearlong blackout

For the first time in more than a year, power services have been restored in Mekelle, the capital of Ethiopia's northern Tigray region, according to state-owned Fana Broadcast on Tuesday.

Power was restored following the completion of maintenance on a 230 kv high voltage line, according to Moges Mekonen, a spokesperson for the government-run Ethiopian Electric Power (EEP), as reported by government owned Fana broadcasting corporate.

After violence broke out in Tigray in November 2020, pitting local forces against federal soldiers and their supporters from the neighboring Amhara region and from Eritrea, the electricity supply was cut.

Thefighting has killed thousands, displaced millions and left hundreds of thousands facing famine.

The two sides signed a permanent cessation of hostilities on Nov. 2 after talks mediated by the African Union in South Africa.
